This is a brief abstract of Prof French's talk: Who among us has not looked up at the night sky and wondered whether we are alone in the universe, with only our Earth harboring intelligent life? Can it possibly be that, among the hundred billion galaxies in our visible universe, each with one hundred billion stars, Earth is the only planet with the right conditions for life? Join Professor Richard French, Chair of Wellelsey College's Astronomy Department, in this thought-provoking inquiry into our special place in the cosmos.
